"What's Your Point John?"

As I sit in McD's this morning, I see the news on the new flat screen tv's. They're showing presidential runners, the weather, and other news. As they ramble on with their mouths running, but no volume coming out I wonder what it is they're talking about. I'm not a very political guy or well cultured guy when it comes to the news, but one thing I have noticed from my little experience in the matter is that they seem to ramble on about the same thing over and over. The news media can get stuck on one thing and report it to death. Well, one could easily get the same attitude towards this book we've been studying for the semester. The more we think about it, John has really only had one thing in mind this whole time he's been writing to us. His point is: "For true believers to know they are saved, they're salvation is demonstrated by how they love others."

Anyone who has put their faith in Jesus Christ is saved, because he becomes our righteousness (2:1), our atoning sacrifice (2:2, 4:10), laid down His life for us (3:16), the Savior of the world (4:13), and washes away all of our sin with His blood (1:7) . All we have to do is confess our sins and He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins (1:9). But a lot of people claim to know Jesus, when they actually only know about Him. They have

When we have truly been loved by God, that love will burst out of us for others (Chapter 3). So the mark of a believer is, has been, and always be love. So we can know we are Christians by our love.

So what was John's point in writing this letter? So that those who are truly saved, can know that they have eternal life (5:13-15) by the love they demonstrate (5:1-5), because they have been loved and given life through Christ God's Son (5:6-12), and that anyone who falls into this category of the "saved" will continue in Him to become more and more Christ like ( 5:16-21).

The last verse of this book is interesting. It's not a goodbye, it's not a greeting, it's not a blessing, it's a charge. "Keep yourselves from idols." Is this because they were subject to idolatry wherever they were. Possibly. But maybe it's because we're all subject to idolatry. We look to ourselves, our money, our spouse, our children, our friends, our church, our job, our stuff, our comfort, our attitude, anything we can look to other than God and His Son, we look to those things instead of Him. Why? Because we're still fallen, sinful people. But we have an advocate with the Father, one who speaks for us (2:1), Jesus Christ. If we know Him, We can be forgiven and saved from our sins of idolatry. But let us not forget Him when we stray into our sinful patterns of idolatry. God help us confess our sins and be forgiven. And only He can help us love people by knowing how truly loved we are in Jesus.

And We'll know we are Christians by our love

1 John 4:7-21-

Jesus said in John's gospel that "the world will you are my disciples, if you love one another." (John 13:35). In other words, people will know we are Christians by our love. There was even a great song written about this. That's great. That's that's how the world knows we're Christians, but how do we know we're Christians?

Don't we all struggle with doubt? "Am I really saved?" "Does Jesus really love?" "Am I a true Christian?" "Am I one of the chosen elect?"

We all struggle with doubt and unbelief. Abraham did, and he's known as the great father of faith. The Galilean man with the demon-possessed son had faith, but also had some unbelief. Every one from time to time has doubts about their standing with God. It is one of the devil's lies to tell us God doesn't love us. He wants us to think that God hasn't pardoned us, or that we don't have faith because we doubt. If God expected everyone to have perfect faith and never doubt, why would he write so much about assurance of faith? That's what John says his letter is intended for, so that for those of us who trust Jesus, we will know that we have eternal life.

So if others will know we are Christians by our love, how will WE know we're Christians?
BY OUR LOVE!!

Check it Out! Here's the breakdown. (1 John 4:7-21)
-"Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God." (4:7)
-"Whoever does not love, does not know God." (4:8)
-"God showed His love to us by sending His Son" (4:9)
-"Not that we loved God, but He loved us, and sent His Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins" THAT'S WHAT I CALL LOVE! (4:10)
-"Since God loved us, we ought to love one another." (4:11)
-"If we love one another, God lives in us" (4:12)
-We rely on the love God has for us" (4:16a), to testify to others about Him (4:14), and we know we live in Him, by the Spirit He has given us (4:13), which lives in us (4:15).
-"God is love, whoever loves, lives in God." (4:16b)
-"In this way....we will have confidence on the day of judgement." (4:17)
-"Love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment." (4:18)
-"We love because He first loved us." (4:19)
-"You can't love God and hate your brother, if you love God (and have been loved by Him), you will love your brother." (4:20)
-"He has told us, whoever loves God must also love His brother." (4:21)

So, again, as I said a couple of weeks ago, there are practical ways to love one another...
-TALKING TO PEOPLE you don't get along with, you disagree with, that annoy you, etc.
- SERVING PEOPLE by offering to help with Making meals, projects, yard work, nursery, Sunday School, work projects, doing dishes, etc.
- GOING TO CHURCH, yes this is one of the ways you love the church, by actually going. Hmm, how 'bout that. You mean I have to actually go to church to love people there? YES! Remember, this is a command from Jesus. We need to be at church.
- HELPING study the Bible, encouraging in their walk, to use their gifts, uplifting, complimenting, etc.
- SMILING, giving HUGS, HAND SHAKES, ACKNOWLEDGE people, etc.
-AND MANY MORE!!!

I challenge you to ask yourself, especially if you struggle with your faith, if you're not sure if you're saved, ask yourself, "Do I love?"

Wednesday in the Word "Jesus the God-Man"

1 John 4:1-6 "Jesus the God-Man"

A lot of people are willing to say Jesus was human. Many are willing to admit He was God. But the numbers slim down when the discussion becomes How much human, and How much God was He. The answer is full for both questions. Jesus is fully God and fully man. 100% in both categories, not split 50%-50%. Not half and half. Fully God and fully Man. How cool is that? It is because Jesus was fully God, humbled Himself, became man, died a death on a cross, and was risen from the dead that we can live in Him. He is our human representative. He lived the perfect life we could not, died the death we deserved, and the wrath that we deserve was upon Him.

Therefore, it is only those who trust that Jesus became flesh, died for their sins and rose from the dead that can have life and can be called children of God. Those who deny Jesus, are of the world, and are not children of God, but children of wrath. The question we need to continually ask ourselves is "Do I really know who Jesus is, and do I KNOW Him?"

1 JOHN 3:11-24 "Love Each Other"

Do you feel like we've been talking about a lot of the same thing. That's cause we have. Maybe that's cause we need to. We need to hear about how we can love people. How we've been loved. How we fail to love. 1 John talks a lot about love. It must've been a pretty important concept to John, huh? I love the heading of this section in the NIV, "More on Love and Hatred" It's simple, to the point. We need to hear this. It's important to God, and should be important to us.

Love for family.
We should love everyone. That's a command, love your neighbor as yourself. But, Jesus also gave us a more specific role as believers. While we should love our neighbor, we are also supposed to love our "family." By family, I mean other believers. He said, "This is how the world will know you are my disciples, if you love one another." We're supposed to love the brothers (and sisters) in Christ. Instead of getting theological, let's look at what this "love" would look like.

- TALKING TO PEOPLE you don't get along with, you disagree with, that annoy you, etc.
- SERVING PEOPLE by offering to help with Making meals, projects, yard work, nursery, Sunday School, work projects, doing dishes, etc.
- GOING TO CHURCH, yes this is one of the ways you love the church, by actually going. Hmm, how 'bout that. You mean I have to actually go to church to love people there? YES! Remember, this is a command from Jesus. We need to be at church.
- HELPING study the Bible, encouraging in their walk, to use their gifts, uplifting, complimenting, etc.
- SMILING, giving HUGS, HAND SHAKES, ACKNOWLEDGE people, etc.

This seems like a simple list, but it's hard to do! Isn't it? We're sinners, we're going to struggle with this. What about when we don't get along with people? Or don't know people? Or don't understand people? Or don't like people? The thing I have to remember is, "Jesus died for them too."

Jesus' love for us
Remembering Jesus' death for us, His love for us, His service for us, His sacrifice for us, His grace for us, His belittling Himself for us, His Mercy to us, His care for us, His compassion for us, His liking us, His listening to us, His communicating with us, His becoming like us, His outreach to us, His building us up, His praying for us, His fill in the blank. The ONLY WAY WE WILL BE ABLE TO LOVE ANYONE, IS TO UNDERSTAND CHRIST'S LOVE FOR US!! It's the over arching theme of love in 1 John, "That we love because He first loved us." I know I don't love well, I know i don't care for other believers well. But I'm not going to be able to conjure up love out of pure guilt. The only way I'll be able to love is by knowing Christ Jesus' love for me.

I repent Lord Jesus of my lack of love for my family, spiritual and physical. I don't serve people, I don't care about people, I don't talk to people, I don't pray for people, I don't even like people, it's not "convenient". Jesus, I'm weak. I'm a sinner. I can't do these things without You.

Please forgive me of my sins of selfishness and conceitedness, and convenience for myself. Wash away my sins by your blood, remind me of your forgiveness and your love for me. Restore unto the joy of my salvation.

Then shall sinners learn from me, and I will teach transgressors your ways. Then I can love my family and non-believers, then I can serve, not because of me but because of You, Jesus. Forgive me, wash me, and make me a new lover and liker of people by the power of Your Holy Spirit in me. Help me! Amen.

Wednesday in the WORD! "Living Because We're God's Children"

1 John 3:4-10 "Living BECAUSE we're God's Children"

I've heard it so many times in church and from fellow believers. "We should live like children of God." And yes, this is true. But it can carry a wrong attitude with it can't it. It sounds like a works based thing. I say say we should live BECAUSE we are children of God. What's the difference?

Living LIKE God's children carries the idea like all we have to do is be like, and live like God's children to be accepted by Him. Living BECAUSE we're God's children carries the idea that WE'RE ALREADY ACCEPTED by Him. The passage we just read last week already told us we're God's children. He loves us so much already, He can't love us any more. No matter what we do, good or bad. So we don't live LIKE God's children, we live AS God's children. We already are His children, and if we are then we will live like it!!

So how do God's children live? Perfect? Without any sin? NO! That's not with this passage is teaching. It seems like it is telling us that if we are God's children, then we won't sin anymore. But that can't be true, because we still sin. So what does it mean when it says those who know God don't continue in sin? (6) Or those who sin are of the devil? (8) Or no one born of God continues to sin? (9) Or anyone who does not do right of not God's child? (10) This is hard to swallow considering he told us in chapter 1 to just admit that we all sin! So what's he saying?

I think he's saying the same thing Paul says in Romans 7. That as new believers under the forgiveness of Christ, our will is changed. We are taken out of our sinful state and given a new heart that wants to do good and is capable of doing good, but our sinful nature our old self is fighting against our new nature and cause us to do what we do not want to do and not do what we want to do. We really are changed! We really do want to do good, and follow Christ, but we stumble and fall. We're sinners and we still revert back to our old ways. But in the long run, a changed heart will continue toward Christ in spiritual growth. God has promised to us that He who began a good work in us, will carry it out to completion until the day of Christ Jesus (Philippians 1:6). It's not immediate. It's ongoing until the final day when we see Jesus Christ. We will always struggle with sin, but for those who have been truly changed and reborn of God, will continue to grow more and more like Christ and more and more away from habitual sinful patterns. Do't forget why John said he wrote this, "So that you will not sin," (2:1) but for any one who does sin we have an advocate with the Father through Jesus Christ (2:1). This is the same encouragement Paul finds in the gospel. Who will save us from the body of death, that keeps on sinning even though we have been saved by grace? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!" (Rom. 7:24-25) The one who saved us, will continue to hold us until the final day. (John 6:37-40). We live BECAUSE we're God's children, and he keeps us and grows us to be more like Christ.

Wednesday in the Word-"Your Daddy Loves You!"

1 John 3:1-3 "Your Daddy Loves You!"

Imagine you see a little boy riding a bike, while his father is watching proudly. He's wobbly and shaky as if it's his first time riding. Maybe it is. All of a sudden you see the bike start to tip over, and.....WHAM! You hear the sound of the little boy's body hitting pavement and the bike being flung around, and even the little bell clinging in a way it was not intended to. What's the first thing you're going to hear after the fall? Or even before? Yes you'll hear crying, but more than likely you'll hear that boy cry out for the person he loves and knows is there "DADDYYYYYY!" He's going to cry out to his daddy. This is the idea Paul had when he said God gave His spirit of sonship, the One who CRIES OUT "ABBA (or daddy)! FATHER!" We have a Father, a daddy that loves us. If that father who was watching his son ride that bike was a loving father, what's he going to do? Tell his boy to "get up! it's not that bad!" NO! He's going to run out to his son, just like God does for us, his prodigal children. He's going to grab his son, and hold him, and comfort him! Just like our heavenly Father will for us in our time of need. Your daddy loves you!

This is exactly what John wants us to know. In our times of failures, sins, or trials and tribulations. We have a Father who loves. In fact he has lavished his love on us. He has poured it out overwhelmingly. We can be called children of God! How awesome is that?! If we trust Jesus for our sins, He gives us His righteousness and God loves us like He loves His only begotten son, Jesus. He says of us, what He said of Jesus, "This is my son, whom I love."

Do you know the love of you Father? Your heavenly Father? Do you know you are a richly loved child of God? (v.1) Do you know there's more to come for those who are his children? (v.2) Are you trusting in His Son, Jesus to purify you from all unrighteousness? (v.3, and 1:7) If you are, then you can rest in the Father's love for you. If you do not know the Father's love, come to Jesus. Ask him to cleanse you from your sins and show you how His Father can be your Father. HE WILL DO IT!

Isn't this just the perfect place to put this reminder of God's fatherly love for us. Right in between two very convicting passages about sin and our responsibility. Because without knowledge of God's love and forgiveness, we would be hopeless with passages that just tell us what to do. But if we have a loving Father, then when we fail and sin, we know that we can confess those sins, because we have a Father who forgives.

1 John 2:12-17 "A song of Love"

We love love songs don't we? Artists make millions of $$ every year off of them. And we buy into them, because our emotions often control our choices. No matter what genre it is, when you hear a sweet story about a boy who grew hating a girl and then they get married 20 years later, or how even though there are millions of girls in the world "They got nothin' on you, babe." People listen to it, get into and buy it. There's something about love songs that grab our attention. Well, in this passage John writes a sort of love song. But it's different than the ones we're used. It's about how we should not love, the world specifically. Let's take a look.

We can divide in to two sections, first we have this poetic form in which John is addressing who he is writing to, Fathers, young men, and children. vv. 12-14. What John has done is he has hit every generation, adult, adolescent and child. Now although these are in the male form, we can take some freedom in applying it to all people. So John is writing to all people, but more specifically to believers. (Remember all of this letter of John is written to believers, so unless you know Jesus as your Savior none of these commands or charges or blessing apply to you and they will do you no good if you do not know Jesus as the Savior for your sins.) This is for people whose sins are forgiven in Jesus' Name (12), who've come to know Jesus who is from the beginning (13,14), who've overcome to evil one by Jesus' blood (13,14), those who know the Father (13), and who are strong and know the word of God and what it teaches us about Jesus (14). He is trying to clearly distinguish who it is that the next part of his "song" is applying to. IT'S FOR BELIEVERS, WHO TRUST IN JESUS ALONE TO SAVE THEM FROM THEIR SINS. The next command is not one to follow to be loved by God and to be saved, it's one to follow BECAUSE we've already been loved by God and ARE saved through Jesus alone. So what is this command.

Don't love the world. There are a lot of things we could say about this one phrase, but basically it's saying this. God is our Savior, He's our Creator, and He's our God. He should be first in our hearts and the one we love. He sent His Son Jesus to save us from our sins because He loved His people. The ways of the world are sin and death, but Jesus came to save us from those things. So if we are in Jesus and are following Him, we cannot also follow our worldly and sinful nature. This doesn't mean we won't trip, stumble, slow down, get lost, or even back track; but it does mean that once we are in Jesus we will continue to grow in Him until the end. God began this good work in us, and He will finish it (Philippians 1:6). If you have been truly saved from your sins by Jesus' blood, you will be changed and continue changing by God's grace and power. So, if the love of the Father is in you, you will not love the ways of the world (v.15).

It's a different kind of "love song"but one written to remind us of the love of our Father, which is what we will get a bigger and clearer picture of next week.

Wednesday in the WORD! "Make up your mind, John"

1 John 2:7-11- "Make up your mind, John."

This is a confusing passage, even though it is short. When reading verse 7 and 8, John almost seems to contradict himself, but we know that can't be the case, because God is the author, and He cannot lie or contradict Himself. So let's look at the passage and try to understand what John is saying.

This is not a new commandment
In verse 7, John says that he is not introducing a new commandment, but speaking about the same commandment that they've had. In fact, they've had it from the beginning. And it's the same commandment that they've always heard.

This is a new commandment
At the same time, John says that this is a new command. Now wait a minute John. You just said this wasn't a new command. What's going on? Well, what he tells us is that even though it is the same command (which I will call law from now on) that we've always had, it takes on a new form and a new meaning in our life now.

For those in Jesus Christ, the law still plays a role in our life. In fact the whole law (or commandments) can be summed up in one word, LOVE. This is what verses 9-11 are all about. Loving your brother (or sister). If you do not love, you are not in the light. We saw this in chapter 1.

So how does the law still play a role? What's our relationship to it. Let's look at the Scriptures. We will paraphrase (check the Scripture links).

- The law helps reveal our sin, which points us to Christ.
- Righteousness is not gained through the law, but through Jesus who kept the law for us!
-Our righteousness is worthless and like filthy rags.
- It was because Jesus followed the whole law and became sin for us that we can be righteous!
- The law now plays a role in our lives because God is love, and he wants us to love.
- We can only do this by the power He gives us through His grace and by the power of the Holy Spirit.

So you see. It's the same law we've always had since Old Testament times, but it's applied differently to the life of a believer. There is no way for us to obtain righteousness through the law. It has to be a gift of grace through faith in Jesus. But the law 1) points us to Jesus because of our sins, 2) helps us appreciate what Jesus did for us, and 3) shows us how to follow Jesus as believers and worship Him through love.

Movies do not start until it gets dark because it is a Drive-in theater. After two movies we usually do not get home until between 2-3:00 a.m. Just so that you are aware. Wednesday in the WORD!- "Jesus our Righteousness"

1 John 2:1-6- "Jesus Our Righteousness"

Chapter 1 of First John is basically a preface to the letter, and now we have John giving his first introduction and reason for his letter. We will also see in the last chapter that this reason falls into the bigger purpose for his letter, to assure believers of their salvation in Christ and their eternity with Him. What is the reason he is writing? So that we will not sin.  Well, that seems kind of harsh after he just told us in the passage before that if we claim to be without sin we are liars. No pressure right? Well, this is where we can really tend to complicate things that don't have to be complicated. And we will see as we go on in 1 John, things will begin to clear up.

So what is John saying? If he told us we are sinners, but then claims he's writing so we will not sin, how does that work? Well, in the same verse he reminds us that if we do sin, we have an advocate with the Father through Jesus. John is not claiming that it is possible for us to live without sin. He clearly stated this in our last passage, "if we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves." But he also told us how to be forgiven, "if you confess your sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." John isn't switching things up in this chapter just because he tells us not to sin. Right after he tells us not to sin, he reminds us that IF WE DO SIN, WE HAVE AN ADVOCATE AND A WAY TO BE FORGIVEN IN JESUS. Are believers supposed to do their best not sin? Yes, of course. But if and when we do, we confess those sins again to our advocate, Jesus.

There is some language here that would be hard to understand without some Old Testament understanding. In the Old Testament tabernacle and temple procedures, the Israelites had to offer sacrifices for their sins on a regular basis. They would come to the Priest, who was their advocate between them and God, they would give the Priest their atoning sacrifice which was their best lamb or other animal which was without blemish, and the Priest would offer this atoning sacrifice to God on their behalf.

Well now in the New Testament, we have Jesus who is God's only Son. He took on flesh and lived perfectly on earth, without a blemish of sin in his life. He was and is the perfect Righteous One.  Jesus offered Himself on the Cross. By doing this He took on the role of our Priest and Advocate because He offered the sacrifice on our behalf; but He also took on the role of our Atoning Sacrifice because He was The Sacrifice Himself. Therefore, if we confess our sins and trust in Jesus to forgive us our sins he will not only do that, but also give to us His perfect Righteousness (2 Cor. 5:21).

So what are we to do if we receive Jesus as our Savior? Keep sinning, because we'll be forgiven?  No! That's crazy talk! Instead, we should attempt to live without sin in our lives, but when we sin, we should just admit it, so that we can remember we are forgiven. The evidence of Jesus's presence in our lives and our change of heart is good works. This is what verses 3-6 are all about. If we truly love and know God, we will obey His commandments. Not perfectly, but we will have a change of heart that wants to serve and follow Jesus. We will struggle with it, but it's what we will want to do if we have been changed by Jesus. Look at Paul's struggle with this in Romans 7. When Paul wants to do good he sins. He does what he doesn't want to do, and doesn't do what he wants to do. And what's his answer to the problem? Wednesday In The WORD!
How it is Organized: When reading ahead in chapter 2 of 1 John, I was having a hard time deciding where to make divisions. You could cover this chapter in about 5-6 different sections, but I don't plan to be in this book until next year. My hopes in doing these Bible studies is to be able to cover several books of the Bible in enough detail to understand God's WORD, but not so much that we can't get to other books of the Bible. The whole Bible and it's message as a whole is the important thing to grasp, so We will cover these books in enough detail to understand them (hopefully), but also to get through them so we can get to others. Now, I'm all about detailed study and meditation on Scripture, but for our purposes I'd like to be able to cover enough at a time to get through several books over the course of a year. In other words, some of the passages we cover will seem to break up weird, or to be too long or too short; but in the end the whole picture is the goal, and the message intended.

"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness"- 2 Tim. 3:16

Wednesday in the Word-JUST ADMIT IT

1 John 1:8-10 "Just Admit It!"

This short passage seems to get right to the point. It's actually built sort of like a sandwich. Look at verse 8 and verse 10. It's like two slices of bread. They are basically saying the same thing. When paraphrased using both verses you could read this, "If we claim(8,10)that we are not sinners(8, 10), we are lying(8, 10) to ourselves(8) and to God(10), and the Truth(8) of His Word(10) has no place in our lives(8, 10)." Pretty cool. It's like they're mirror images, with a little different wording. In Psalms and Proverbs this type of similar phrasing is called parallelism. This is usually done to emphasize a point the writer is trying to make. John is using it for the same reason here. What is it that he's emphasizing? That we are all sinners! We cannot claim to be without sin and to have never sinned before, because if we do then that's a lie and we call God a liar, and both of those are sins. So what in the world are we supposed to do? God hates sin. Right? Yes, He does. And God Himself is Light and can have nothing to do with darkness, so while we are still dark from sin we cannot have fellowship with Him. But John had already alluded to a solution to this problem and told us the solution; We can trust in the Good News of Jesus, and Walk in His Light when we have be cleansed by the blood of Jesus (1 John 1:7).

So how do we receive this forgiveness? Simply by admitting it. We have to admit (confess) that we are sinners and that we need God's forgiveness by the blood of Jesus. Let's not forget the meat in the sandwich, that's the best part! Look at verse 9. All we have to do is confess our sins, and ask for forgiveness, and God will forgive us of our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. He will light up the darkness!

And for the people (including myself) who have already accepted Jesus as their Savior, this isn't a one time deal. While it is true that when we accept Jesus as our Savior, we are forgiven once and for all of all our sins, God is still continuing His work in our lives and making us more holy every day. So we can come back to this verse, and confess our sins on a daily basis and know that we are forgiven because God's grace through Jesus Christ.

So what to I have to do? JUST ADMIT IT!!

Well, it's the second week and I've already run a day behind. Better late than never.

1 John 1:5-7 "I wanna be in the light"

I) 'God is Light". He is the way we see. He shows us the way. He lights the way. He is the Way (John 14:6). He shows us when we are lost and shows us how to not be lost. God Himself does not know darkness. He is perfect light"ness". It's something interesting to think about with John. He is a very symbolic writer. With this illustration we see how importance it is to have God in our lives because without Him we would not be able to see! Literally. Ever been in a cave before? I remember going cave diving in Belize. We all had headlamps and when we had swam (swum? I can't ever get that right) deep into the cave our guide had us turn them all off. It was the freakiest thing ever. You could hear each other in loud echos, but you couldn't see ANYTHING! I decided to reach my hand as close as I could to my face until I could see it. I TOUCHED MY NOSE AND STILL COULDN'T SEE IT! As soon as we turned one little light on we could see everything! One little light can light up the darkness.

II) We are dark by nature. We are sinful and separated from God. That is what we inherited from our fathers and mothers. Whether we are born in a Christian or non-Christian family, either way we are sinners. We are all equally dark. We are not born in light. We are sinners and we are lost in the dark and we still need that Light in our lives to show us the Way. What is that light?

III) Obviously you're going to say God is the Light. But more specifically, Jesus is our Light. In John 1 we see this told. He came into the world to show light to the world (John 1:4-9). Look at the last verse in our passage, it is Jesus' blood that washes us from our sin (our darkness) and brings us into that marvelous light (1 John 1:7). Through His blood that cleanses, we can have fellowship with others in the Light. This is the Light of the Gospel. the Light is that Jesus came into the world not to condemn the world, but that through Him the world might be saved (John 3:17). Jesus is our Light! He cleanses us from our darkness, and it is He who shines is us!

IV) What do you use a light for? To light up the dark places! Just like those headlamps in the caves of Belize. Now that we have this Light in our lives what are we going to do with it? If you have a light burning in an already lit place it is doing no good. You must take that light into the dark places to produce good from it. Carry it out and share it. Take it to the dark places. To places of sin. To places that need the Light of Jesus' love. The good news is this Light does not burn out. You can keep sharing and sharing and it will grow brighter and brighter. How bright do you want your light to be? Jesus told His followers (believers in Him) to shine their light before all men that they might see our good works (Matt. 5:14-16). Not to earn favor with God, but to bring people to God in Jesus, through our acts of love. Share this good news! Share the Light of Christ with those who are lost in the darkness, because He first loved us (1 John 4:19), and pulled us out of darkness and brought us into his wonderful light (1 Peter 2:9)!

Jesus Christ is our Light. He shows us our sins and cleanses them for us! I wanna be in the
Light!

Since the Bible is the Word of God and Jesus is the Word made flesh, these will be Bible studies designed for easy reading by breaking down each section of Scripture into focus points so that we can grow in our knowledge of the Bible and in our relationships with Jesus. Please feel free to give any input by commenting on our posts, or by letting Kent know your suggestions for books of the Bible or other concerns. (kentsuits@gmail.com). To begin our “Wednesdays in the Word” we will be going through the book of 1 John, because it introduces us so well to the idea of studying the WORD in both of It's forms (the Bible and Jesus). Enjoy reading!!

1 John 1:1-4

Intro:

“I’VE GOT GOOD NEWS!” When you hear someone say that, don’t your ears perk up? Don’t you want to hear what their good news is? What about after you’ve heard good news? Don’t you want to go tell people that good news? Did you know that the word “Gospel” literally means "good word" or “good news?” And that’s exactly what the Gospel of Jesus is, it’s Good News. And in this first passage, John thinks that it is a natural reaction to want to share this Good News with people. SHARE THE GOSPEL!

I. SEE. "Word" and "Life" are both words which are repeated over and over in the John’s Gospel, his first book in the Bible. "In the beginning was the Word.” “In Him was life, and that life was the Light of men" (John 1:1, 4 NIV 1984). This is a Life which only comes from Jesus. It is not just referring to our natural life, but instead an eternal life that only God can give, a spritiual life. A life we can only have in Jesus Christ, THE WORD.

II. TRUST. In verse 2 John goes on to repeat the importance of hearing and passing on this news of the "Life" which is in Christ Jesus. What is this life? We are sinners, we displease God. BUT GOD sent His Son Jesus Christ to suffer and die and take on the punishment for our sins. When we accept Christ as our only Savior from our sins, then we become spiritually alive in Christ. This is the Gospel that we trust in and believe by the power of God. We must put our hope of salvation in the only One who gives it, Jesus Christ. It is the only way (John 14:6). After we have received this life it is our reaction and pleasure to share this Word of Life with our friends, family and even strangers.

III. SHARE. Starting in verse 3, we see that John once again writes IN REPITITION that they now proclaim what they have seen and believed. When we see the Christ come alive in us we want to share that saving grace to others. THIS IS GOOD NEWS! It is our privilege to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with others. We long for others to join us in our fellowship with Christ, therefore we proclaim the Gospel (“good news”) of Jesus Christ to them.

IV. JOY. Our Joy will one day be perfected when we share time with Jesus Christ side by side in heaven. But for now, we can also find joy in the fact that another is saved by grace. God rejoices over the one sheep that was lost but now is found (Luke 15:1-7). We also as Children of God, should find joy in the coming of new brothers and sisters. In verse 4, John found joy in the coming of new believers. Do You?

The main summary of this passage, is to SEE, TRUST, and SHARE the good news (Gospel) of Jesus, then we will have JOY in seeing more people come to know the saving power of Jesus Christ through faith.

Did you know that there's not actually a verse from Jesus that tells us to be "in the world but not of it?" Yet His teaching and prayers in the Gospels teach this concept. But what does it mean to be in the world but not of it?

Physically and culturally, we are in the world. We are born here, we eat here, we breathe here and we live here. We like certain music, colors, patterns, and styles. We are in the world. But spiritually, for those who believe in Jesus, we are not of the world. John 17:16-18 Jesus is praying for all believers when He says, "They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world." For those who are believers in Jesus Christ, and trust in Him to save them from their sins, He is also sanctifying (cleaning them; making them holy) into His Image. What this means is that although we do live in this world, we are not to be tangled up in the sinful patterns of this world, but to testify to the Word of Truth which we have heard through Jesus.

How do we testify to Truth that we've heard? Paul said, "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind" (Rom. 12:2). So how do we reach people in the world, without conforming to them? Paul also said, "I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings" (1 Cor. 9:22b-23). The blessings of knowing the gospel and sharing the gospel are understanding how the gospel applies to your everyday life, and seeing people come to saving faith in the gospel.

Paul was not conformed to the image of the world in its sinful patterns, yet culturally Paul became "all things to all men (or people)." We have to understand where the division is between cultural patterns and sinful patterns. Often the two can intermingle, but with the sanctifying work of the gospel in our lives, Jesus can help us determine those patterns, and know which patterns we are to adopt so that we can be relevant and which ones to reject for our own spiritual transformation. As believers and followers of Christ we are to be in the world culturally, but not of the world spiritually.

Here is a great example of someone who is trying to witness to people based on our current culture, but not lose the Truth of the Gospel spiritually.

After such an awesome impact that our Prayer Retreat had on the students and myself, I thought of doing something to encourage the continually growth in our prayer life. 4th of July was awesome! Played some pool games had great food cooked by a bomb chef and saw the fireworks at the Dam. Thanks for coming out. Enjoy the post. Here we are playing Star or Intials or whatever.Best Buds Chillin' in the pool.
